What is Windows blue screen of death?
Blue screen of death which is also known as blue screen, BSODs, blue screen of Doom, blue Screen error, STOP error is basically caused by the applications that are not compatible with the system OS. Blue screen when appears makes your Windows system to unexpectedly shutdown or the only action the user can take is to restart the computer and the same problem may repeat if the root cause is not resolved. This problem is because OS will no longer function properly at that instance of time and the contents of RAM will be dumped on to a single data file. Thus all .dll files of the OS gets installed resulting in blue screen of death (BSOD).
There are wide varieties of BSOD, among different members of Windows family. Some of them differ in colors and others by errors codes present on it. Apart from BSOD there are Red Screen of Death (RSOD) and Black Screen of Death (BSOD).
Example of BSOD format code used in Windows NT operating system is
STOP: 0x0000008a (0x0000000000000008, 0x0000000000000000, 0xfffffa800a1206f0, 0x000007fbba710218)
There are four parts in the above error message; each part indicates certain things which are mentioned as below:
- First part indicates actual error message for the OS crash
- The second part indicates about the process modules that are loaded into memory previously by the kernel
- The third part tells about the modules that are ready to be loaded in the memory
- The fourth part refers to the current status of the kernel debugger
Windows OS versions after Windows NT displays first part alone which will be binary value ranging from 0x00000001 to 0x0000005F. Also there are some error messages that are displayed along with these codes. These error messages are displayed separated by underscore instead of white spaces as shown below.
- KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR:directs that the kernel page requested is unreadable.
- BAD_POOL_HEADER:indicates that the OS is crashed as a result of recently installed programs or modification in the security settings
- REGISTRY_ERROR:points out OS is unable to read data from registry
- INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE:Hard drive failure or failure in hard disk interface
- UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP:RAM device failure or use of two irrelevant SIMMs in PC.
- IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL:Unsupported device drivers.
- NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM:specifies corruption in the hard drive
Some points to remember in order to overcome BSOD problem
Restore back if anything is changed recently: If blue screen appears on your system recently, then restore back your system settings thus software will be back to its previous state. If this method works out, then it’s due to software problem.
Verify internal hardware connections: Ensure all internal components are connected firmly and cards are fixed in their sockets. But in case of laptops it’s difficult to check this. Hence make sure whether hard drive and Ram are connected properly.
Test your Hardware: In order to scan for errors and fix the problem run “chkdsk” function because if hard drive is failed it may cause Blue Screen due to damaged files.
Minimal hardware components to essentials: One of the best way is to use only essential hardware and removing that is not required to run computer which helps to detect the hardware component causing problem. During troubleshooting while solving BSODs and many other issues it is required to start your computer with minimum hardware which are necessary to run the OS. Required necessary hardware to start your computer OS includes motherboard, RAM, CPU, keyboard, monitor and video card. Thus, if it results in successful start of your computer then it is conformed that one of the hard drive which was removed resulted in the BSOD problem.
Boot your Computer to Safe Mode: If your computer displaying Blue Screen whenever you turn it on then try booting into safe mode as in safe mode, only essential drivers will be loaded by Windows.
Scan your computer for malwares: Malwares gets in to your Windows system resulting in system instability by infecting MBR (master boot record). So it is necessary to ensure whether your system is associated and updated with good anti-virus application and scan your computer to check if malicious software is responsible for BSOD.
Install your computer with Drivers: If drivers are installed incorrectly results in crashes. Hence it is required to download and install latest updated drivers for your system hardware so that BSODs issues can be fixed if problem existing due to drivers.
Check for minimum amount of free space on Windows partition: Minimum amount of free space should be made available on Windows partition in order to overcome Blue Screen of Death and other scenarios like data corruption may result if there is no minimum free space on your primary partition which is used for the Windows operating system.
It is recommended by Microsoft for Window users to maintain 100 MB of free space on drive.
Reinstall your computer: One of the best ways to fix BSODs and other issues like virus infection, software conflicts etc on your computer is by reinstallation of Windows. Even after this if your computer continues displaying Blue Screen then some hardware problem exists.
Verify Hardware problems: Faults in the hardware may also result in Blue Screens. So it’s better to ensure computer temperature is not overheating as it may result in Blue Screen and several other issues including data loss. Hence it is better to fix the computer if overheating. Most common component to overheat is graphic card and the second most is CPU.
Also if you are facing memory issues with your computer, you should run memory tests to check for the problems and fix it by rebooting your system.
Hardware settings should be restored to default else it may known to cause Blue Screen of Death.
The best solution for the above issues can be provided by using Remo Recover Software, which can be used to overcome data loss that occurs during BSOD.
